Defence Ministry Signs Rs 2,867 Crore Contracts to Strengthen Submarine Capabilities
The Indian Ministry of Defence has recently signed two contracts for submarine projects, totalling approximately 2,867 crore rupees, aiming to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Navy and support the country’s self-reliance in defence technology.
AIP Plug Development
The first contract, valued at around 1,990 crore rupees, focuses on the development of an Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) Plug. This contract was awarded to Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai. The AIP system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will be integrated into Indian submarines. AIP technology enhances the endurance of conventional submarines, allowing them to operate underwater for extended periods without surfacing.
Integration of EHWT
The second contract, worth approximately 877 crore rupees, involves the integration of the Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedo (EHWT) onto the Kalvari-class submarines. This contract was signed with Naval Group from France. The integration process will be a collaborative effort involving the Indian Navy, DRDO, and Naval Group. The incorporation of EHWT will boost the firepower of the Kalvari-class submarines, enhancing their operational effectiveness.
Employment Generation
The Ministry of Defence has stated that these projects are expected to generate nearly three lakh man-days of employment. This initiative aligns with India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) initiative, promoting indigenous defence production and technological advancement.
The advancements in submarine technology are crucial for India’s maritime security. AIP systems and advanced torpedoes provide a strategic edge in underwater warfare.
