India Advances Cross-Border Electricity Initiatives

India is currently engaged in extensive discussions with several nations. These include Oman, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the Maldives, and Singapore. The objective is to establish cross-border electricity transmission lines. This effort is part of the ‘One Sun One World One Grid’ (OSOWOG) initiative. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, OSOWOG aims to create a globally interconnected grid for renewable energy.

OSOWOG Overview

OSOWOG envisions a network that facilitates the transfer of renewable energy across borders. The initiative promotes energy sustainability. It allows surplus solar or wind energy in one region to address deficits in another. This interconnected approach optimises resource utilisation and reduces the need for extensive energy storage.

India-Oman Interconnection

One of the key components of OSOWOG is the interconnection between India and Oman. This link is crucial for enhancing renewable energy flow in the region. Discussions are ongoing about a 1,000-km undersea power cable connecting Gujarat to Oman. This cable aims to establish a secure energy exchange route.

Benefits of Cross-Border Grids

Integrating regional grids enhances the management of renewable resources. Solar, wind, and hydro resources vary by region. By sharing these resources, nations can better handle supply and demand peaks. This integration improves grid stability and reduces reliance on fossil fuels.

Current Electricity Exchange

India currently exchanges around 4,100 MW of electricity with its neighbours. These include Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Myanmar. This figure is projected to rise to 7,000 MW by 2026-27. New interconnections are in development to facilitate this increase.

Political and Regulatory Support

The success of OSOWOG relies on political backing and regional coordination. Robust regulatory frameworks are essential for smooth implementation. Countries must collaborate to establish effective mechanisms for energy exchange.

Future Plans for Connectivity

India is prioritising cross-border power connectivity. Plans are underway for an interconnection with Sri Lanka as well. OSOWOG will enable countries to meet peak power demands using fewer resources. This approach positions renewable energy as a stable component of regional power supplies.

Important Facts for Exams:

  1. OSOWOG – OSOWOG stands for One Sun One World One Grid. It aims to create a global interconnected grid for renewable energy. The initiative promotes energy sustainability across nations.
  2. ISA – ISA refers to the International Solar Alliance. It was founded in 2015 by India and France. ISA aims to promote solar energy deployment worldwide and enhance energy cooperation.
