India Achieves Total Fertility Rate of 2.0

India has reached a Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 2.0, which aligns with the goals of the National Population Policy 2000 and the National Health Policy 2017  and the TFR target was set at 2.1. The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel, announced this in the Rajya Sabha.

Family Planning Programme Initiatives

The government has launched various initiatives under the Family Planning Programme, which aim to provide effective contraceptive methods. They include condoms, oral contraceptive pills, emergency contraceptives, intrauterine devices (IUCDs), and sterilisation options. Recent introductions to contraceptive options include the Antara injectable contraceptive and the Chhaya Centchroman pill. These new methods enhance choices for family planning.

Mission Parivar Vikas

Mission Parivar Vikas is a key programme focusing on family planning and aims to improve access to services in seven priority states and six Northeastern states. The initiative targets areas with high fertility rates. The government provides financial support for individuals undergoing sterilisation. This incentive encourages people to consider permanent family planning options.

Post-Pregnancy Contraceptive Options

The programme includes post-pregnancy contraceptive choices. Options such as Post-Partum IUCDs, Post-Abortion IUCDs, and Post-Partum Sterilisation are available. These methods help manage fertility after childbirth. Annual public awareness campaigns promote family planning. Events like World Population Day and Vasectomy Fortnight raise awareness and educate the public.

Quality Assurance in Healthcare

The government has certified 16,586 health facilities under National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS). This certification ensures high-quality care in public healthcare centres. It has recently been extended to Integrated Public Health Laboratories (IPHLs).
