Inauguration of Thottiyar Hydroelectric Scheme in Idukki

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is set to inaugurate the Thottiyar Hydroelectric scheme in Idukki on October 28, 2024. This 40 MW project is noteworthy for its efficient use of water in power generation. Officials anticipate an annual output of 99 million units of electricity.

Project Highlights

The Thottiyar project stands out due to its low water requirement. During trial runs, it exceeded expectations by generating 173 million units. This efficiency is crucial for sustainable energy production.

Power Generation Capacity

The scheme consists of two generators: a 10 MW unit and a 30 MW unit.

  • The 10 MW generator was connected to the power grid on July 10, 2024.
  • The 30 MW generator followed suit on September 30, 2024.

This dual capacity allows for a robust output while utilising minimal water resources.

Water Source and Infrastructure

The project uses water from the Deviyar stream, which connects to the Periyar River. A check dam has been constructed across the Deviyar in Valara. This dam is the primary water source for the Thottiyar project. Key infrastructure includes:

  • A 222-metre-long and 7.5-metre-wide check dam for water storage.
  • A 60-metre-long canal directing water flow.
  • A 199-metre-long tunnel leading to the penstock pipes.

Penstock and Powerhouse

The penstock pipes are 1,252 metres long, facilitating water flow to the turbines. Water falls through 474.3 metres of penstock pipes, driving vertical turbines in the powerhouse. The powerhouse is located at Neendapara, near the Periyar River. After generating electricity, water is released back into the river, ensuring ecological balance.

Project Costs and Funding

The total investment for the Thottiyar Hydroelectric scheme is ₹188 crore. This funding supports both construction and operational costs.

Inauguration Details

The inauguration ceremony will take place at Lower Periyar. Key officials attending include Power Minister K. Krishnankutty, Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine, Idukki MP Dean Kuriakose, Former Power Minister M.M. Mani, and Other local MLAs and district officials. This event marks an important step in Kerala’s renewable energy initiatives.
