IIT-Bombay gears up to take up Aakash-3 as next project

After a successful launch of Aakash-2 — India’s low cost device for higher education — the IIT Bombay is now planning the next improved version of the tablet Aakash-3. The institute will soon release a global tender for producing 50 lakh units of Aakash-3.

What will be major improvements with Aakash-3?

As proposed, upgraded tablet will:

Work on a SIM
Faster processor
Higher memory capacity

However, it will be challenging to keep the price unchanged.

Currently Aakash-2 is being purchased by the government at Rs. 2,263 per unit, which is being distributed to students and institutions at around 5o% subsidy at Rs. 1,130. Government targets to train 1 lakh teachers once every college and institution gets the device.
