IHGF-Delhi Fair begins
The 48th Indian Handicrafts and Gifts Fair (IHGF) organized by the Ministry of Textiles began in Greater Noida on October 16, 2019. More than 3,200 Indian exhibitors are participating in the fair. Around 110 overseas buyers from 110 countries are participating in the event as well. They are here to source furniture, fashion, lifestyle and textiles products of the exhibitors.
In the event, the Ministry extended its support to the proposal of EPCH for setting up handicraft parks for apparel and handloom.
Significance of IHGF
Handicrafts are important in terms of economic development. The sector provides a number of opportunities for the unemployed with a minimal investment. The sector earns around Rs 43,000 crores (2015) of rupees annually. Out of this, it earns an export of Rs 10,000 crores annually.
About EPCH
The EPCH is the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts and was established under Companies act (1986-87). It is the apex body for the handicraft exporters in India. It is the nodal agency to promote exports of handicrafts to different destinations. The Council has set up Handicrafts Carpet Sector Skill Council that implements the VRIKSH initiative. Apart from this, it has also launched the Indian Timber Legality Assessment and Verification Scheme that aims to establish a chain of custody and legality of wood.
