IFFI 2024 in Goa

The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is set to begin on November 20 in Goa. This nine-day event will run until November 28, which aims to showcase cinematic excellence alongside Goan culture.

Organizers and Structure

The festival is organized by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), and the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG). The event will feature a diverse selection of films and cultural events.

Focus on Young Filmmakers

An important emphasis will be placed on young filmmakers. The CMOT section received over 1,000 entries, more than double the previous year. This marks the growing interest in new talent.

Film Selections

IFFI 2024 will showcase over 180 international films from 81 countries. This includes 16 world premieres, 43 Asian premieres, and 109 Indian premieres. Australia is designated as the “Country of Focus.”

Opening Film and Awards

The festival will open with “Better Man,” a biographical film about Robbie Williams. The Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award will be awarded to Philip Noyce, an acclaimed Australian director.

Supporting Emerging Talent

A new Best Indian Debut Director Award will be introduced. Over 25 masterclasses and panels will feature industry leaders, including AR Rahman and Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

The festival will highlight diversity, showcasing 47 films directed by women and 66 by young filmmakers. For the first time, IFFI will be fully accessible, with audio descriptions and sign language interpretation available.

Interactive Experience and Infrastructure

IFFI 2024 will introduce ‘IFFiesta,’ an interactive experience with music, dance, and food. The festival will also benefit from improved infrastructure, including six new theatres and an expanded Film Bazaar.

Important Facts for Exams:

  1. CMOT – The CMOT section received over 1,000 entries this year. This is more than double last year’s submissions. It marks growing interest in young filmmakers.
  2. IFFiesta – IFFiesta is an interactive experience at the festival. It will feature music dance and food. This event aims to enhance engagement and enjoyment for attendees.
  3. Satyajit Ray Award – The Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award is prestigious. It will be presented to Philip Noyce this year. Noyce is known for acclaimed films like Patriot Games.
