2022 Hurun Global 500 list was released recently, with India ranking at the 5th position.

What is Hurun Global 500 List?

The Hurun Global 500 list is a compilation of the world’s top 500 most valuable non-state-controlled companies. It is released by the Hurun Research Institute. The companies in this list are ranked based on their market capitalization (for listed companies) and valuation (non-listed companies).

What are the key highlights of the 2022 Hurun Global 500 list?

  • India has risen from the 9th rank to the 5th rank in the 2022 edition of the Hurun Global 500 list.
  • The country has 20 companies that were featured in this list. Out of these 20 companies, 11 are based in Mumbai, four in Ahmedabad and 1 each in Noida, New Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata.
  • The USD 202 billion Reliance Industries is the most valuable company in India, followed by Tata Consultancy Services, with USD 139 billion valuation and HDFC Bank having $97 billion valuation.
  • Reliance Industries and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), ranked at 34th position and 65th position, are the only two Indian companies to feature in the top 100 in the list.
  • The US companies are the top performers in this list, with an increase from 17 companies to 260 companies. They account for 65 percent of the total value in the list.
  • China is the second-best performer, with 35 companies being featured in the list. It is followed by Japan, and the United Kingdom.
  • India and Canada have moved up to the fifth rank. Each of these two countries have 20 companies in the list. They overtook France and Germany.
  • New York is the base for 31 companies. This makes it the top performer in the Top cities of Hurum Global 500. The second and third positions are held by Tokyo (16) and London (15) respectively. Paris takes up the fourth position, followed by Mumbai.
  • The Adani Group has four new entrants – Adani Transmission, Adani Green Energy, Adani Enterprises and Adani Total Gas – having a total valuation of 173 billion USD.
  • Financial services were the largest contributor to the Hurun Global 500, with 21 per cent or 104 companies providing them witnessed a high profit growth.
  • Energy is the biggest winner in 2022, amid the rising prices of oil and gas caused by the war in Ukraine. It has overtaken the healthcare industry to reach the second position.
  • 57 energy companies contributed a value of 1.2 trillion USD out of the total 4.1 trillion USD value.
  • Food and beverages industry is the only other sector that witnessed a growth in value, with giants like Mars, PepsiCo and McDonald’s growing by an average of 20 billion USD each.
  • The largest countries without any Hurun Global 500 company are Iran, Turkey, Poland, Thailand, Israel and Norway.
