How does Poshan Maah contributes to our society?

Poshan Abhiyan is India’s flagship programmes to improve nutritional outcomes for children, adolescents, pregnant woman and lactating mothers by the full utilization of technology, and a targeted approach. First started in the year 2018, by the Prime Minister on the International Women’s Day on 8th March from JhunJhunu in Rajasthan the day is observed in the month of September every year. The programme is undertaken by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The whole month of September involves a month-long-activities focusing on prenatal care, optimal breastfeeding, anaemia, growth monitoring, hygiene, diet, food fortification and sanitation. The government also organizes several quizzes on food and nutrition on My Gov portal. A unique kind of nutrition park at the newly built Statue of Unity has been created wherein, one can learn nutrition-related education along with fun and frolic. The main objective of the mission since its inception has been to reduce malnutrition within three years. More than 12.2 Crore women, 6.2 Crore men and over 13 Crore children were reached through the various activities undertaken during POSHAN Maah last year. Talking in numbers, it is worth mentioning that 30.6 Crore people were reached during 30 days long activity. POSHAN Maah has given a major drift to the Poshan Abhiyaan in total. The month-long activities during the Poshan Maah strictly focus on Social and Behavioural Change Communication (SBCC) and are based on Jan Andolan Guidelines. SBCC is the strategic use of communication approaches to promote changes in knowledge, attitudes, norms, beliefs and behaviours. Whereas, Jan Andolan is one of the strategies under the Poshan Abhiyaan.
