Himachal Pradesh: ‘Naari Ko Naman’ Scheme
Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Jai Ram Thakur, launched the “Naari ko Naman’ Scheme, for women of the state.
Background
- This scheme has been launched, in line with an announcement made before state assembly elections.
- Himachal Pradesh government has announced to give 50% discount in ticket prices to women in state government buses.
- Thus, bus tickets will now be available for women at half the cost.
Government’s expenditure
Under the scheme, Himachal Pradesh government will spend Rs 60 crore annually to provide 50% discount on ticket prices to women in state. As per estimate, 1.25 lakh women travel in HRTC buses every day.
Reduction in minimum fare
Apart from providing concession to women in tickets to women, government also announced to decrease the minimum fare in HRTC buses from Rs 7 to Rs 5. Furthermore, 25 posts of women drivers will be filled in ‘Ride with Pride’ taxis of HRTC. 265 posts of Motor Mechanic, Electrician etc will also be recruited in HRTC.
Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC)
HRTC is the state-owned road transport corporation in Himachal Pradesh. It provides bus services to towns and cities within the state and adjoining and states of Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir. HRTC is one of the first RTC’s in India that provides for online booking of tickets in all types of buses. It was jointly founded, in 1958, by Government of Himachal Pradesh, Government of Punjab and Railways as “Mandi-Kullu Road Transport Corporation”. It was founded to operate in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. On October 2, 1974 this corporation was merged with Himachal Govt. and was renamed as Himachal Road Transport Corporation.
