Hemant Sonawala, pioneer of Indian IT industry passes away
Hemant Sonawala, one of the pioneer founders of India’s information technology (IT) industry passed away on 30 May 2015 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was 78.
As a visionary industrialist and entrepreneur he had played important role laying the foundations of Indian IT industry which has grown and subsequently shown meteoric rise in past two decades.
Sonawala was chairman of Hinditron Group which was started in 1966 and engaged in IT, scientific instrumentation and Tele-communication services. Company’s computer division was started in 1971.
He was also the founder of Digital Equipment India which was the first technology Initial public offering (IPO) company in India. Digital Equipment India later in 1988 became a part of Hewlett-Packard (HP) India.
Apart for this, he was also associated with the Computer Society of India (CSI), Indo-American Chamber of Commerce, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), NASSCOM.
