Haryana Launches $10B World Bank-Funded Clean Air Project
Chief Secretary of Haryana, announced that the World Bank will be funding a big project to help the climate. With Rs. 10 billion set aside to fight air pollution, the Haryana state government is about to start the “Haryana Clean Air Project for Sustainable Development.” The project will be put out in stages, starting with districts in the National Capital Region (NCR) and then spreading to the rest of the state. The goal of this strategic, step-by-step plan is to successfully deal with air pollution.
Project Funding and Governance
This ten-year project is fully funded by the World Bank and is managed by a governing committee led by the Chief Secretary. This committee makes sure that the project is carried out in a way that meets its goals.
Key Focus Areas
The initiative has identified three main focus areas to tackle air pollution:
- Enhancing Air Quality Monitoring: Developing a state-of-the-art laboratory and upgrading four existing facilities to monitor air quality more accurately.
- Infrastructure for Implementation: Creating a dedicated Programme Management Unit to ensure seamless execution of the project.
- Training and Capacity Building: Organizing training programs for stakeholders involved in air quality management to enhance their effectiveness.
Comprehensive Sectoral Interventions
The main goal will be to cut down on waste from the following sources: –
- Transportation: Promoting electric vehicles (EVs) in both the public and private sectors and giving people benefits to get rid of old, polluting cars.
- Industry: Encouraging businesses to use clean energy for their processes, such as using clean fuels in boilers and fixing diesel generators to meet emission standards.
- Urban Planning: Creating more green city areas by building biodiversity parks and green belts.
- Agriculture: To stop waste from burning, encourage using bio decomposers to manage crop residues on-site.
Current State of Air Quality Infrastructure
Haryana’s infrastructure for tracking air quality has gotten a lot better. The state runs four sample-testing labs and 29 Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQM) and 39 Manual Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (MAAQM) in different districts.
