Harnessing Geraniol for Eggplant Crop Protection

Farmers face numerous challenges in protecting their eggplant crops from pests, including the shoot and fruit borer (SFB). However, recent research conducted by scientists at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune has uncovered a natural compound called geraniol, which shows promising results in reducing the reliance on synthetic pesticides. This discovery has the potential to revolutionize eggplant cultivation and ensure a safer and healthier crop.

Unveiling Geraniol’s Effects

The research revealed that moths displayed a remarkable aversion to plants infused with geraniol, particularly the Himalayan eggplant variety known as RC-RL-22 (RL22). Unlike other eggplant varieties, which suffer significant losses from the SFB and require heavy pesticide spraying, RL22 demonstrated natural resistance due to the presence of geraniol.

Geraniol’s Role in Pest Control

Geraniol acts as a deterrent, preventing gravid SFB females from laying eggs on RL22 plants. This breakthrough finding offers a promising alternative to synthetic pesticides, reducing the risks associated with chemical usage and protecting the environment. By emitting geraniol, farmers can effectively deter pests and reduce infestations, ensuring a healthier and more abundant eggplant harvest.

Experimentation and Results

The IISER Pune research team conducted experiments using different eggplant varieties, including the Eastern Himalayan variety (RL22), as well as popular Indian varieties. Within a controlled environment, they observed the oviposition behavior of SFB females and recorded their response to plants infused with geraniol. The results were significant, with moths avoiding RL22 plants and laying fewer eggs compared to other varieties. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry further confirmed geraniol’s deterrent effects.

The discovery of geraniol’s potential in eggplant cultivation offers a sustainable and natural solution to combat pests like the SFB. By harnessing this compound, farmers can protect their crops, reduce the reliance on synthetic pesticides, and mitigate health risks.
