Harbhajan Kaur Dheer becomes first Asian elected mayor in UK

Indian-origin councilor Harbhajan Kaur Dheer of Labour Party became the first Asian woman to be elected as mayor in United Kingdom.
She was elected as mayor of Ealing Council in London by succeeding councilor Tej Ram Bagha.
It should be noted that Ealing Council is located in the heart of west London and serves the residents and businesses of London’s third largest borough.
Harbhajan Kaur Dheer was born in Punjab in 1953 and has moved to Britain in 1975. She had obtained a degree from Social Sciences at Kingston University in 1995.
Till 2003, she had worked as Mental Health Professional and had passionately advocated rights of children and elderly including those with mental health issues.
Her husband Ranjit Dheer is presently councilor of Ealing Council and is a former Mayor of Ealing from 2001-2002.
