Gujarat: Student Start-ups and Innovation Policy 2.0

On January 5, 2022, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Education Minister Jitu Vaghani launched “Student Start-up and Innovation Policy (SSIP) 2.0” in the state of Gujarat.

Why was SSIP 2.0 launched?

  • SSIP 2.0 was launched with the aim of financially supporting the school students in innovation, at International Conference of Academic Institutions (ICAI-2022). ICAI 2022 is a pre vibrant summit, which was held at Science City on January 5, 2022.
  • SSIP 2.0 rules provides support to any person aged up to 35 years, who is a school student; or a vocational, diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate & doctoral student; or an alumna, alumnus or any dropout from institute, university or school.
  • Under it, state government plans to establish functional innovation and incubation centres across all the universities in state.

Vision of SSIP 2.0

SSIP 2.0 is being launched with the vision of sustainable development and inclusive growth, for the realisation of Aatmanirbhar Gujarat.

Significance of SSIP 2.0

SSIP 2.0 is significant in light that, there are so many innovations done by school students. But they do not get any platform to showcase them. The new policy will support such innovations financially and help in taking them from “Mind to Market”.

Financial Support

  • As per rules of SSIP 2.0, support system at school level will be provided a maximum of Rs 20,000 per proof of concept/prototype/innovation for classes 9-12, with the aim of “catching them young”.
  • Support will also be extended to collective/community level support system as well as activities for others along with large-scale sensitisation, programmes and events to develop the scientific mindset.

SSIP 1.0 Vs SSIP 2.0

  • The outreach of SSIP 2.0 has been increased by five folds, as compared to SSIP 1.0. SSIP 1.0 covered 10 lakh students of higher & technical education institutes while, SSIP 2.0 will cover 50 lakh students. Out of 50 lakh students 35 lakh are school students while remaining are students from higher and technical education institutes.
  • SSIP 1.0 had provisioned Rs 100 crore for five years (2017-21). In SSIP 2.0 the overall financial support for five years has been increased to Rs 500 crore.
