Gujarat govt provides 33% quota for women in police force
Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel announced 33% quota for women in police force. Though 33% reservation for women in police force already exists but due to stringent criteria for physical tests, the percentage could not be met. The government will adjust those criteria to facilitate women in passing the tests.
The move by the state government is being viewed as a pursuance of the women empowerment agenda of the Chief Minister.
As per the figures provided by Bureau of Police Research and Development, there are only 84,479 women cops in India against total police strength of 15.85 lakh. This renders women representation to just about 5%. Maharashtra with 20,062 women cops have the highest number of women cops followed by Tamil Nadu (10,118) and Delhi (5,356).
