Gujarat becomes 7th state to receive President Colours
The Gujarat police was presented the ‘President’s Colours’ by Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu at a ceremony held in Karai Police Academy in Gandhi Nagar on 15 December 2019. Gujarat now becomes the seventh state to receive the prestigious President’s Colours, also called as Nishaan, an emblem which all police officers of Gujarat would wear on left-hand sleeve of their uniform. A new logo of Gujarat Police was also unveiled and the force was also awarded a specially designed flag and an emblem.
Why was Gujarat Police Force Honored?
The presentation of Presidents Colors was recognition of tireless, longstanding and meritorious service, gallantry and dedication of the Gujarat Police to the nation. Moreover, the officials and personnel of Gujarat Police are equipped with modern technology, skills and training to improve its efficiency in maintaining law and order and peace.
Gujarat police was raised on 1 May 1960, when the state was formed. President’s Colours is a decoration in recognition of Gujarat police’s glorious track record, gallant deeds and achievements in past 59 years. With a sanctioned strength of more than 1.06 lakh personnel, Gujarat police is 8th largest police force in country.
Background
In early 2019, the Gujarat police had prepared a proposal about decoration and sent it to Union Home Ministry for approval. Later, a committee of seven DGP rank officers evaluated Gujarat’s police proposal and unanimously held that it is eligible to get this symbol of excellence. Subsequently, in March 2019 President granted his approval to present the President’s Colours to the Gujarat police.
