Geological Survey of India (GSI) Geoscience Museum
The Vice President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, recently inaugurated the Geological Survey of India (GSI) Geoscience Museum in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. The ceremony featured a ribbon-cutting and plaque unveiling, showcasing a blend of tradition and modern innovation. Numerous dignitaries attended, denoting the event’s significance.
Museum Overview
The GSI Geoscience Museum aims to educate visitors about Earth and its history and features two main galleries designed to inspire curiosity and understanding of geological phenomena.
Gallery I – Planet Earth
Gallery I focuses on Earth’s uniqueness and diversity. It displays phenomena such as volcanoes, meteorites, and magnetic fields. Interactive displays and multimedia exhibits enhance visitor engagement. Notable specimens include Antarctic rocks, rare gemstones, volcanic rocks from Japan, fossils from the Himalayas, Deccan Trap minerals, and dinosaur eggs.
Gallery II – Evolution of Life
Gallery II narrates the story of life on Earth, from its origins to the rise of humans, which includes detailed exhibits on ancient ecosystems, evolution, and mass extinction events. Fossils and immersive displays provide vital information about the past while prompting considerations of the future.
Dignitary Engagement
During the inauguration, dignitaries, including the Vice President, toured the galleries and praised the exhibits. The Vice President acknowledged GSI’s contributions to studying India’s geological wealth and supporting sustainable resource management.
Shri Satish Chandra Dubey, Minister of State for Coal and Mines, issued the museum’s first ticket, symbolising a celebration of India’s geological heritage. He recognised Shri R.V. Karanth for his contributions to the gemstone gallery and for donating his personal gemstone collection to GSI.
Shri Asit Saha, Director General of GSI, stated that the museum would be a vital resource for researchers, educators, and geoscience enthusiasts. It aims to promote awareness of Earth’s processes and their significance for sustainable development.
