Govt. signs Memorandum of Settlement with National Liberation Front of Twipra
A peace agreement was signed between Government of India, State government of Tripura and Tripura’s banned insurgency group National Liberation Front of Twipra led by Sabir Kumar Debbarma (NLFT-SD). As per the agreement NLFT-SD has agreed to abjure path of violence and join mainstream.
A Memorandum of Settlement was also signed in this regard between, Centre, State Government of Tripura and NLFT-SD with group also being agreed to surrender its 88 cadres with their weapons.
Key Highlights
National Liberation Front of Twipra (NLFT) has been banned under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) since 1997. The group has been involved in violence, operating from their camps across international border.
NLFT-SD: The insurgent group has been responsible for violent activities during period 2005-2015 including 317 insurgency incidents in which 28 security forces and 62 civilians lost their lives. In 2015, peace talks with NLFT were initiated and since 2016 there has been no violence by NLFT.
The surrendered cadres will be given surrender benefits as per Scheme for Surrender-cum-Rehabilitation of Militants in the North-East, 2018 of Ministry of Home Affairs.
State Government of Tripura will help surrendered cadres in recruitment, housing, and education. Also, centre will consider proposals of Tripura State Government regarding economic development of tribal areas of Tripura.
