Govt extends deadline for filing income tax returns till September 30
The government has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for the fiscal year 2018-19 by two months till September 30.
Reason
The Central Board of Direct Taxes has announced this in view of the pandemic situation in the country and to ease the compliance aspect for the taxpayers in the country. The earlier date for filing was valid till 31st July, 2020.
Background
The government had given extensions in two earlier occasions also and this is the third such extension given by the government to the taxpayers to file both original and modified tax returns for the 2018-19 fiscal year. In March, it had been extended from March 31 to June 30 and then for one more month till July 31.
Central Board of Direct Taxes
It is the authority tasked with the responsibility of the administration of laws related to the direct taxes in the country. It was established under the Central Board of Revenue Act, 1963. It consists of a Chairman and six members.
