The Government of India recently shared its data on the pending court cases in the country. Data was shared in Rajya Sabha. According to the data, the numbers have reached 4.32 crores. Around 69,000 cases are pending in Supreme Court. 59 lakh cases are pending in 25 High Courts in the country. The data is based on the information available at the National Judicial Data Grid.

Pending cases in HC

More than 10 lakh cases are pending in Allahabad HC alone. The least number of pending cases was in the Sikkim High court which is around 171.

National Judicial Data Grid

It holds information about case details, and judgements pronounced in HC, district courts, and subordinate courts.

Reasons for the increase in pending cases

The inadequate number of judges is the main reason. The practice of seeking adjournment is another main reason for the increase in pending cases in Indian courts.

Why do some courts perform better than others?

Availability of quality judges. Top judges in a state are reluctant to join the bench. This is because they are of the opinion that their financial earning reduce if they join the benches.

Way Forward

Pending vacancies should be filled in at the earliest; Remuneration of the judges should be increased for the quality judges to join the bench; alternate dispute resolution mechanisms shall be introduced.
