Government to scrap NSO’s consumer expenditure survey

The ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MOSPI) has decided  has decided to scrap the National Statistical Officer’s (NSO’s) consumer expenditure survey conducted in 2017-18 because of “data quality” issue.  The survey shows significant divergence in consumption pattern and with administrative data sources. This is the first time the government has scrapped an NSO survey of this scale since the erstwhile NSSO was established in 1950. The ministry is further examining the feasibility of conducting the survey in 2020-21 and 2021-22 after incorporating all data quality. On Nov 14, findings of the report published by Business Standard showed that consumer spending are falling for the first time over the period of four decades in 2017-18.  The CES is a flagship survey of the National Statistical Office (NSO), formerly known as the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), and is conducted every five years.
