GeM Facilitates Hiring of 1 Million Manpower Resources

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has marked achievement by facilitating the hiring of over 1 million manpower resources in the fiscal year 2024-25. This digital procurement platform, launched by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, aims to streamline public procurement processes for government organisations. GeM’s manpower outsourcing service provides an efficient and compliant solution for hiring skilled and unskilled personnel.

What is GeM?

GeM was established in August 2016 to digitise public procurement in India. It provides a one-stop online platform for government departments and public sector undertakings to procure goods and services. The current version, GeM 3.0, was launched in January 2018, enhancing features like e-bidding and reverse e-auction.

Manpower Outsourcing Service

GeM’s manpower outsourcing service allows government buyers to hire diverse roles, including security personnel, data entry operators, and more. The platform hosts over 33,000 service providers, enabling buyers to select resources based on skills and compliance with labour laws. This service simplifies the hiring process and promotes transparency.

Growth and Adoption

The milestone of 1 million manpower resources hired reflects the growing trust in GeM. The platform has expanded its service offerings since its inception. In FY 2019-20, it began including services like cab hiring and security services. Today, GeM encompasses over 330 services, including advanced options like drone and cloud services.

Economic Impact

Public procurement constitutes 15-20% of India’s GDP. An efficient procurement process is crucial for economic stability. GeM has recorded a Gross Merchandise Value of ₹2 lakh crore during FY 2022-23. The platform has generated substantial savings for the government, estimated at around ₹40,000 crore.

Transparency and Compliance

GeM eliminates human interface in vendor registration and transaction processing. This reduces delays and corruption. It ensures compliance with standards and provides visibility of all transactions. The platform promotes fair competition among sellers and encourages startups and MSMEs.
