GoI fixes upper age limit of CDS post as 65
Government of India has fixed the upper age limit of CDS post as 65. The post is of great importance as he will serve as the military advisor of the government and will also possess nuclear powers. He will also head the agencies like space and cyber that were formed recently. Any Chief in the Indian Government shall hold office only for a period of three years.
Highlights
The post was recently approved by the Cabinet. According to the approval, the maximum age limit of the CDS officer was put at 62 years. Now it is being amended late as it required legislation changes.
Legislation changes
The Union Government has amended Army rules, 1954, Naval Regulations, 1965, Air Force Regulations, 1964 and Miscellaneous regulations, 1963 in order to implement the move.
Another change apart from the age that is being made in the Army rules, 1954 is that the term “General” will be used for both army chief and CDS. Same rules were amended in Naval and air force regulations as well. If the CDS officer was from Navy, then the term “Admiral” will be used and if he is from air Force, the term “air Force officer” will be used.
