GoI established I4C and a portal to deal cyber crimes
On January 10, 2020, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and a National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. The centre was approved in October 2018 at a cost of 416 crores.
Highlights
The I4C has 7 major components. It includes National cyber Crime Threat Analysis Unit, Platform for Joint Cyber crime Investigation team, National Cyber Crime reporting portal, cyber crime ecosystem management unit, national cyber-crime training centre, National Cyber Research and Innovation centre and Cyber crime Ecosystem management unit.
So far, 15 state governments and Union Territories have agreed to set up Regional Cyber Crime Coordination Centres.
The National Cyber Crime reporting portal will enable the citizens to report cyber crimes online. It has specific focus on crimes against child pornography, women, child sex abuse.
Significance
According to NCRB (National Crime Research Bureau), 2017, the cyber crimes has doubled in India. Apart from I4C, the central government has also launched NIC-CERT (National Informatics Centre-Computer Emergency Response Team).
The centres are highly important for India to achieve its 5 trillion-dollar economy by 2024. This is because, Indian Power sector alone faces at least 30 events being reported daily. The attacks originate from Singapore, China and Russia.
