Goa Maritime Conclave-Highlights

Third edition of the annual Goa Maritime Conclave (GMC-21) started in Goa from November 7, 2021.

Key Points

  • In the conclave, India will be host to the Navy chiefs of 12 nations of the Indian Ocean Region.
  • GMC-21 will comprise of a three-day-long conclave on building working-level deliberations, which also took place during Goa Maritime Symposium-21 in May 2021.

Agenda of the conclave

  • At the GMC-21, Indian Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh will host Heads of maritime forces from 12 Indian Ocean littorals namely, Comoros, Bangladesh, Madagascar, Indonesia, Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mauritius, Singapore, Seychelles, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
  • They will discuss the significance of interoperability for effectively dealing with emerging & future maritime security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region.
  • Keynote address of GMC-21 will be delivered by Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar and Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla.
  • As part of the conclave, visitors will get an opportunity to witness India’s indigenous shipbuilding industry at ‘Make in India Exhibition’.

Three Sessions of the Conclave

The conclave will be held in three sessions:

  1. Collective Maritime Competencies for countering non-traditional threats
  2. Session for strengthening regional cooperation enforcing maritime laws
  3. Session for mitigating emerging non-traditional threats

The theme of GMC 2021 is “Maritime Security and Emerging Non-Traditional Threats: A case for proactive role for Indian Ocean Region”

Goa Maritime Symposium-21

The Symposium was the Sherpa event for GMC-21.

Indian Ocean Region and GMC

Indian Ocean region has become the focus of 21st-century strategic landscape. In this region, GMC aims to bring regional stakeholders together and discuss on collaborative implementation strategies for this region.
