Gmail’s Android version becomes first single app to pass 1 billion installations
Google’s Android version of Gmail app has become the first individual smartphone app to pass one billion installations on Android devices. The rankings were done by Google Play Store which ranks apps by downloads in different ranges and the Gmail Android app figured into the one to five billion bracket.
The figure doesn’t take into account updates, so there is no double-counting when an update is provided. And the Google Play services app is disqualified from the counting, as it is required as part of the Google Play Store.
Many groups of apps, such as Outfit7’s range of Talking Friends apps, have already passed the one billion downloads, but downloaded of an individual app one billion times is unprecedented. In 2012, the Angry Birds collection of games passed one billion downloads.
