The Global Hunger Index is prepared by Welt Hunger Life (a German organisation) and Concern Worldwide (Irish organization).

- The Global Hunger Index is calculated based on four indicators namely child wasting, undernourishment, child stunting, child mortality.
- It is a tool to measure hunger across the world.
Global Hunger Index 2021
- The Global Hunger Index 2021 termed India as alarming.
- India was placed in 101st position in the Global Hunger Index 2021. In 2020, India was in 94th
- India has been positioned behind its neighbours such as Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
- The Global Hunger Index score of India has declined. It was 38.8 in 2000. However, between 2012 and 2021, it reduced to the range of 28.8.
- The share of wasting among children was 17.1% between 1998 and 2002. It has increased to 17.3% in 2016-20.
- India improved in indicators such as prevalence of stunting among children, prevalence of undernourishment and under-5 mortality rate
- The top ranks were held up China, Brazil and Kuwait. Their scores were less than five.
- The report said that, in 2021, hunger is driven by weather extremes, climate change and health and economic challenges associated with COVID-19.
- Nepal was ranked 76th, Myanmar 71st, Bangladesh at 76 and Pakistan at 92.
- The report said that around 47 countries will be unable to achieve the Zero Hunger target by 2030.
