Global Farewell for Football Icon Sunil Chhetri
An important player in Indian football, Sunil Chhetri, has officially retired from international football. His farewell match, which was a World Cup Qualifier against Kuwait, took place recently in Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium. This marked the end of his illustrious career spanning 19 years.
Sunil Chhetri’s Achievements
Chhetri got 94 goals in 151 international games, which ranks him fourth all-time in terms of goals scored by an international player, after Cristiano Ronaldo, Ali Daei, and Lionel Messi. This accomplishment is even more impressive when you consider that India is still having trouble securing its place in the world football rankings.
Global Recognition
Chhetri’s retirement was celebrated all over the world, with tributes coming from FIFA, the Croatian football player Luka Modric, and the Indian cricket great Sachin Tendulkar. In a post honoring his career, FIFA talked about how he had worked for them for almost twenty years. Modric sent Chhetri a video message in which he wished him well and called him a “legend of the game.”
Impact on Indian Football
Chhetri has been an example to many in Indian football because of how well he scores goals, leads his team, and is dedicated. His part was bigger than just playing; he had a big impact on Indian sports culture and inspired future generations. Even though he retired, his legacy lives on as a high bar for young Indian football players. Honors and Awards from Around the World Sachin Tendulkar, a famous cricket player, and the Asian Football Confederation praised Chhetri’s work and efforts after his last game. The Indian Premier League (IPL) teams and Viren Rasquinha, who used to be India’s hockey captain, also gave him high marks for his work and leadership.
