Global Bribery Risk Index

The Global Bribery Risk Index is published by TRACE. TRACE is an anti – bribery standard setting organisation. It measures bribery risks in 194 countries, autonomous regions, territories and semi – autonomous regions. In 2021, India was ranked 82nd in the Global Bribery Risk Index. In 2020, India was at 77th rank.

What are the key findings of Global Bribery Risk Index 2021?

  • The 2021 Global Bribery Risk Index says that the bribery risks were the lowest in New Zealand, Sweden and Finland. The bribery risks were the highest in Venezuela, Turkmenistan, Eritrea and North Korea.
  • In the last ten years, the business bribery environment has worsened in countries that are experiencing democratic blacklisting. These countries are Poland, Hungary, Turkey, Venezuela and Egypt.
  • The business bribery risk environment in the US has worsened as compared to the global trends in the past five years.
  • The commercial bribery risks have increased in countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council.

How is Global Bribery Risk Index calculated?

The Global Bribery Risk Index is calculated using four factors. They are anti – bribery deterrence, interactions with the government, capacity for civil society oversight and civil service transparency. TRACE uses data collected from World Bank, V – Dem Institute at the University of Gothenburg, international organisations and World Economic Forum to calculate the index. It measures the bribe demands in 194 jurisdictions. It was first published in 2014. The main objective of Glboal Bribery Index is to meet the need of business community for reliable information.

What is India’s position at the Global Bribery Risk Index 2021?

India was ranked at 82nd with a score of 44. India performed better than its neighbours such as China, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh. However, Bhutan secured 62nd rank overtaking India. The countries that performed similar to India were Montenegro, Macedonia, Peru and Vanuatu.
