IPBES UN Biodiversity Conference

The 11th meeting of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) commenced in Namibia on December 10, 2024. Over 850 scientists and representatives from more than 150 countries are in attendance, aiming to address the global biodiversity crisis.

Key Reports Presented

Two important reports will be revealed during the meeting, providing scientific insights and expert guidance on policies to combat biodiversity loss. They aim to inform actions to protect nature and its contributions to humanity.

The Nexus Assessment

One report is the Nexus Assessment, which examines the links between biodiversity loss, water shortages, food insecurity, health issues, and climate change. The report proposes integrated solutions to tackle these interconnected challenges. It took three years and over $1.5 million to complete. A total of 165 experts from 57 countries contributed. They reviewed over 6,500 information sources. The report is set for release on December 17, 2024.

The second report is the IPBES Transformative Change Assessment, focuses on the causes of biodiversity loss. It outlines necessary changes in technology, economy, and society to restore biodiversity. Arun Agrawal, a key contributor, states that transformation is essential for sustainable development. This report also took three years and over $1.5 million to complete. It involved 101 experts from 42 countries and reviewed around 7,000 sources. The release date is December 18, 2024.

Future Assessments and Global Cooperation

Delegates will discuss the next Global Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. This assessment follows a 2019 report that indicated a million species face extinction risk. Pohamba Shifeta, Namibia’s Minister of Environment, calls for increased international cooperation. He emphasises the importance of involving local communities in conservation. Recent discussions suggested five new topics for future IPBES assessments.

IPBES is often likened to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Both organisations guide policy decisions. This meeting marks the first time IPBES convenes in Africa.
