On 7th November, the 9th edition of the Dhaka Lit-fest has started with a galaxy of writers and book lovers thronging the venue ground at the Bangla Academy. The special focus of this year’s lit-fest is on Indigenous Languages as the UNESCO has marked 2019 as the year of Indigenous Language Protection. On the first day of the event, West Bengal-based writer Abhisek Sarkar  and Bangladeshi poet Rofiquzzaman Rony were given the Gemcon Young Literature Award and Gemcon Young Poetry Award for their manus, “Nishiddho” and “Dhoashar Tamate Rong,” respectively.

Stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma has become the first Indian man and second in world cricket to complete 100 T-20 Internationals. He reached the milestone when he led the team in the 2nd match against Bangladesh at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium. Shoaib Malik with 111 games from Pakistan is the only player to have played more than 100 T20 Internationals. Rohit is currently the top-scorer in T20 format with 2452 runs at a strike-rate of 136.67 with 4 hundreds and 17 half-centuries.

Notes:
Nepal has recently formally protested over the inclusion of the disputed area of Kalapani on the fringes of Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand as part of Indian Territory in the new political map of India. Kalapani is claimed by Nepal as a part of its Darchula district. It has been controlled by India’s Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) since the 1962 war with China.

Legendary Bengali poet-novelist, Nabaneeta Dev Sen (81) has passed away in Kolkata on 7th of November. Besides a poet, novelist, columnist and writer of short stories and travelogues, Dev Sen was also known for her research on the Ramayana. She worked as a teacher at the Oxford University and the Colorado College in the US. She also taught Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University. She married Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen in 1958. They got divorced in 1976. She won the Sahitya Akademi award in 1999 for her book ‘Naba-Nita’, and was also the recipient of the Padma Shri in 2000.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has recently conducted a 2-day rescue exercise, the Regional Level Search and Rescue Workshop and Exercise 2019 (ReSAREX- 19) off Goa shore, Panaji. The event was organized by the Coast Guard District Headquarters-11 (Goa) and comprised search and rescue workshops with table top exercises.
