Girish Chandra Murmu is the new CAG of India

The government has appointed Girish Chandra Murmu as the new Comptroller and Auditor General of India with effect from August 8, 2020. He was the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, prior to joining this post. Murmu has been sworn-in by the President of India. He succeeds Rajiv Mehrishi in the office of CAG.

Who is Girish C Murmu?

GC Murmu is a post-graduate in Political Science from Utkal University and he also holds an MBA Degree from the University of Birmingham. Born in 1959 in Mayurbhanj District in Odisha and has wide experience in administrative, economic and infrastructure fields. He has also served in important posts in Gujarat. Apart from that, he has been the Secretary of the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.

What is CAG?

It is an independent authority under the Constitution of India. The main objective of this department is to check if the government departments are following all the rules and regulations while making any expenditure. In the Indian Constitution, Article 148 deals with the office of CAG. The CAG is appointed for a period of 6 years or until attaining the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. CAG cannot take up any other post after his retirement.
