GEO-7 Report: A Global Call for Environmental Action

An important global effort is underway, led by hundreds of scientists drafting the GEO-7 report. This initiative, under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), aims to address critical environmental challenges. The seventh edition of the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) is set to be published at the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in December 2025.

What is GEO-7?

GEO-7 is an extensive assessment of the latest environmental science. It compiles existing reports and research to provide policymakers with a clear understanding of environmental issues. The report is structured into 21 chapters, covering all aspects of the environment. It aims to change how we perceive and address these issues.

Significance of GEO-7

The report is because it offers a comprehensive view of environmental challenges. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of environmental issues with other sectors, such as the economy, agriculture, and health. This holistic perspective encourages a shift from isolated problem-solving to integrated solutions.

Focus on Solutions

GEO-7 is solution-oriented. It presents pathways for action and future outlooks, particularly for the years 2050 and 2100. This foresight helps decision-makers understand the urgency of addressing environmental degradation. By denoting potential consequences, GEO-7 motivates immediate action.

Role of Policymakers and Stakeholders

Policymaker involvement is crucial in the GEO-7 process. The Intergovernmental and Multi-stakeholder Advisory Group oversees the report’s direction, budget, and scope. This group ensures that feedback from Member States is incorporated, enhancing the report’s relevance and effectiveness.

Over 300 scientists worldwide are contributing to GEO-7. Member States have nominated experts to review various sections. Engaging scientists from diverse regions enriches the report, bringing in varied perspectives and knowledge.

Encouraging Action Among Policymakers

The GEO-7 team is creating an executive summary tailored for decision-makers. Each chapter will have its own summary, making the report accessible and actionable. This approach aims to inspire policymakers to implement the recommended solutions.

GEO-7 seeks to engage a broader audience. Plans are in place to use social media and other platforms to reach youth, universities, and various community segments. This outreach will help disseminate findings and encourage public engagement with environmental issues.

Long-Term Vision for Policymaking

A key goal of GEO-7 is to influence long-term policymaking. Edgar Gutierrez-Espeleta, the co-chair of the report, emphasizes the importance of thinking beyond immediate electoral cycles. Sustainable decisions made today will shape the future, particularly regarding food security and environmental health.

About the Global Environment Outlook

The Global Environment Outlook (GEO) is UNEP’s flagship report. It assesses environmental change drivers, the current state of the environment, policy effectiveness, and future options. GEO-7 is being developed in response to a request from Member States and will be launched at UNEA-7 in December 2025. The report aims to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding and addressing global environmental challenges.
