Gavi Supports Rabies Vaccines for Global Eradication Efforts
Recently, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, increased its support to include rabies vaccines for humans in regular immunization programs, focusing on post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). This program aims to intensify efforts worldwide to fight rabies, especially in areas where the disease is most common.
Eligibility and Application Process
Countries that can get help from Gavi are being told how to get these vaccines through Gavi’s program of co-financing. They can start applying for money as early as the middle of July 2024, but they will need to make detailed plans for how to use the vaccines properly first.
Global Rabies Context and Challenges
About 95% of rabies deaths in humans happen in Africa and Asia, mostly in poor areas that can’t get medical care easily. Most of the time, the disease is spread by dog bites, which can cause serious neurological symptoms and almost always death if not treated quickly.
Integration with Global Campaigns
The support for vaccines is in line with the Zero by 30 campaign, which is being led by United Against Rabies and aims to get rid of rabies spread by dogs in humans by 2030. This coordinated plan shows how important it is to take more than one method, such as better surveillance, vaccinating dogs, and raising public awareness.
About Gavi
- Mission and Achievements: The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (Gavi) was created in 2000 to help children in the world’s poorest countries get new vaccines that aren’t being used enough. Gavi has vaccinated more than 888 million children and stopped more than 15 million deaths from happening before 2021.
- Collaborative Efforts: WHO, UNICEF and the World Bank are some of the public and private organizations that work with Gavi to help it do its job better. The strengths and resources of several groups are being used together to make vaccination programs more effective.
- Initiatives and Innovations: Together with CEPI and WHO, Gavi set up the COVAX center to make sure that everyone in the world has equal access to COVID-19 vaccines. The goal is to give out 2 billion doses by the end of 2021. Gavi also helps to strengthen health services and comes up with new ways to deliver vaccines to increase vaccination coverage.
