Ganga Expressway Project
The Ganga Expressway project is an approved 594 – km long project. It is a 6 – lane project. It is to be constructed in Uttar Pradesh. It runs between Meerut and Prayagraj.

About the Project
- The project was launched in 2007 by the then UP Chief Minister Mayawati.
- The aim of the expressway is to connect eastern and western parts of UP. Also, to construct a highway along the banks of River Ganga.
- The project was stayed by the Allahabad High Court due to environmental concerns.
- The total project value is 37,350 crores of rupees.
Phase I
The project has been divided into 12 packages. They are Meerut to Hapur, HApur to Amroha, Amroha to Budaun, Budaun to Binawar, Binawar to Shahjahanpur, Shahjahanpur to Hardoi, Ubariya Khurd to Hardol, Iksai to Raiya Mao, Raiya Mai to Sarson, Sarson to Terukha, Terukha to NAudhiya and Naudhiya to Prayagraj.
Phase 2
In phase 2, the project is to be extended on either end. That is, Meerut to Haridwar and Prayagraj to Ballia via Varanasi.
Status Updates of the project
- January 2019: the project was revived
- Feb 2019: Expressway is to be constructed along the Ganga river. A distance of ten kilometres is to be maintained for environmental compliance
- Sep 2019: Expressway to be ready by 2024.
- Feb 2020: Rs 2,000 crores allotted for the project
- May 2021: 3,440 hectares of land is acquired for the project
- August 2021: 6,532 hectares acquired in all (90% of the required land). Punjab National Bank approved Rs 5,100 crores of loan to the project
- November 2021: Rs 36,000 crores cleared for the project
- December 2021: Adani wins the bidding. PM Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath laid foundation stone
