Gaganyaan Mission: ISRO, Navy undertake trials

The Gaganyaan is a crewed space mission of ISRO. It is expected to be launched in 2024. Indian astronauts received their training from Russia’s ROSCOSMOS to fly to space in the mission. HAL designed and built the crew module. DRDO is to provide food for the astronauts, parachutes, and a fire suppression system and will monitor the health of the crew while they are in space. The Indian Navy and ISRO recently conducted recovery trials along with Indian Navy. The simulation was provided by the Water Survival Test Facility of ISRO.

About the Recovery trials

  • The trials were conducted at the Water Survival Test Facility, Kochi.
  • To conduct the trials, the test facility created a crew recovery model. The model will simulate the centre of gravity, mass, outer dimensions, etc.
  • The recovery trial was conducted in a closed pool

Role of Water Survival Test Facility

The facility provided training to the astronauts to escape from a ditched aircraft. It simulated varied conditions under which the astronauts escaped safely. It provided simulations of different sea states, day and night conditions, and environmental conditions.

Significance

Safe recovery is the final step in a human space flight program. The recovery has to be done at the lapse of time. Therefore, it is essential that the recovery trials be conducted in different scenarios. Also, extensive practice is required.
