Gaganyaan

Gaganyaan is a proposed manned space mission by Government of India. This will be India’s first manned mission, to be launched by 2022.

Announcement

The mission was announced on August 15, 2018 (Independence Day) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his independence day speech from Red Fort. Prime Minister said that  by or before the year 2022, a son or daughter of India will be sent to outer space with a national flag. The year 2022 will mark India’s 75th Independence Day. So far, only three countries viz. United States, Russia and China have sent their manned missions to space.

India’s space missions

India’s first lunar probe was Chandrayaan-1, launched by state space agency Indian Space Research Organisation in October 2008. Mangalyaan and NAVIC project are other two prominent and successful space mission of the country.
