G-4 ingeminates call for UNSC expansion
India and three other member countries of the G-4 emphasised the need for expansion of the UN Security Council (UNSC) membership in both permanent and non-permanent categories and improving upon the working methods of the UNSC.
India, in this regard made a Joint introductory statement on behalf of the G-4 countries (Brazil, Germany, India and Japan) at the informal plenary of the inter-governmental negotiations at the UN in New York.
G-4 had reconfirmed that Africa should be represented in the permanent membership in an enlarged Council.
- The Statement focused on two aspects of Security Council reform, on which, large majorities exist among Member States:-
Firstly, that expansion in membership should be in both categories, permanent and non-permanent.
Secondly, that the working methods of the Council should be improved.
The G4 is an alliance among Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan for the purpose of supporting each other’s bids for permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council.
