Four Year Integrated Teacher Education Programme

The four-year integrated teacher education programme was launched under the National Education Policy 2020. The programme is to be offered in fifty institutes spread all over India.

About four-year integrated teacher education programme

It is a dual-major bachelor degree programme. It is offered under Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP). It integrates BSc and BA degrees with B Ed. This programme will help students save a year. Earlier, it takes five years for a student to purse B Ed after completing bachelor’s degree. The National Council for Teacher Education has designed the curriculum of the course. The National Council for Teacher Education operates under Ministry of Education. The four-year ITEP is available for all students who choose teaching as profession after completing their schooling.

Admissions

The admissions for the programme are held by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The NTA conducts National Common Entrance Test to shortlist candidates willing to take the course. The course is to be offered by multi-disciplinary institutions. And the course is to become the minimum qualification for school teachers. The course is to commence from 2022-23.

Options in the course

The course provides two options namely one year B Ed and two-year B Ed. The two-year B Ed option is for those candidates who have a Bachelor’s degree. On the other hand, the one-year B Ed is for those candidates who have completed the equivalent of a four-year multi-disciplinary Bachelor’s degree. The two-year B Ed course is also for the PG holders. Such one-year course takers will later be hired as subject teachers in the area of speciality (or based on the subject pursued at UG and PG level).

Background

The National Education Policy 2020 states that the teacher engagement from 2030 will be only through ITEP, that is, Integrated Teacher Education Programme. The new education policy has introduced several changes in the curriculum. This includes teaching in regional language. This new course will help to prepare teachers in accordance to the policy and its new curriculum.
