Four indigenous Naval Systems developed by DRDO inducted to the Indian Navy

Defence Minister has handed over the four indigenously built Naval systems to the Indian Navy. The four systems that were inducted were: ABHAY – Compact Hull Mounted SONAR for shallow water crafts, HUMSA UG – Upgrade for the HUMSA SONAR System, NACS – Near-field Acoustic Characterisation System, and AIDSS – Advanced Indigenous Distress SONAR System for submarines. The four systems have been designed and developed by

All the four systems have been designed and developed by Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), a Kochi-based premier laboratory of DRDO. The induction of these four systems is likely to boost navy’s underwater surveillance capability besides providing self-reliance.

 ABHAY is an advanced Active-cum-Passive integrated SONAR system designed for the use of smaller platforms such as shallow water crafts and coastal surveillance vessels.

 HUMSA-UG is an upgrade of the existing HUMSA SONAR system of the Indian Naval platforms. They will be installed on seven ships of three different classes.

 NACS, which will be fitted on all frontline ships helps to determine the in-situ performance of the SONAR systems. It will be useful in determining 3-D transmission and reception characteristics of the SONAR.

 AIDSS is a distress SONAR. It is an Emergency Sound Signaling Device used to indicate that a submarine is in distress to the nearby ships and submarines for quick rescue and salvage.
