Fisheries Development Initiatives Under PM Matsya Sampada Yojana

The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is initiative aimed at transforming India’s fisheries sector. Recent launches included the establishment of artificial reefs and integrated fisheries facilities. Financial assistance was provided for boats and safety equipment. The scheme targets a wide range of beneficiaries. These include fishers, fish farmers, fish workers, and various cooperatives. It aims to empower marginalized communities and enhance their economic security.

The fisheries sector plays a vital role in India’s economy. It supports approximately 30 million people and contributes to the Gross Value Added (GVA). In FY 2022-23, the fish production reached 175.45 lakh tons, making India the third-largest fish producer globally.

Future Goals and Vision

The government aims to double fish production and exports. The target is to achieve ₹1 lakh crore in fish exports. The vision aligns with “Viksit Bharat @2047,” focusing on sustainable growth and development in the fisheries sector.

Technological Integration

The use of technology is very important in enhancing fisheries practices. Initiatives include the deployment of drone technology for fish transportation. Satellite data from ISRO will assist fishermen in locating fish-rich zones.
