Fish with high cesium level found near Fukushima plant

The Japanese utility that owns the tsunami-damaged nuclear power plant has found a record 740,000 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium in a fish caught close to the plant.

  • This level is 7,400 times higher than the Government limit for safe human consumption.
  • Radiation was spread into the surroundings of the Fukushima nuclear plant after it was damaged in the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami.
  • Most fish along the Fukushima coast are barred from market.
