First Waste To Energy Plant of Indian Railways inaugurated
The East Coast Railway Zone on Thursday, 23rd January 2020 has commissioned the first waste-to-energy plant of the Indian Railway’s at Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The facility was inaugurated by Rajesh Agarwal (Railway Board Member). This was the fourth such plant to be commissioned in the country, but also the first in the government sector of India.
The plant will turn e-waste and plastic into light diesel oil in less than 24 hours. A new technology called ‘Polycrack’ which was recently patented is to be used in the waste-to-energy plant. A large pile of non-ferrous scrap generated from the Carriage Repair Workshop could not be efficiently disposed of earlier, creating environmental hazards. Now the waste can be converted into hydrocarbon liquid fuels, gas, carbon and water. The plant is estimated to generate an annual income of Rs 17.5 lakh against a maintenance cost of around Rs 10 lakh yearly. The first waste to energy plant in India was set up back in 2011 by Infosys at Bengaluru.
