First meeting of National Ganga Council

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi chaired the first meeting of the National Ganga Council held in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, 14th December 2019.
The National Council for Rejuvenation, Protection, and Management of River Ganga(referred to as National Ganga Council) was constituted on 7th October 2016 under the Environment Protection Act of 1986. During its first meeting, the council under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister of India was aimed at reinforcing the importance of an approach in all departments of the Central Ministries and concerned states that will be ‘Ganga-centric’.
The central government to ensure adequate as well as uninterrupted water flows, has made a commitment of Rs 20,000 crores for the period 2015-20 to the five states through which river Ganga passes.
A Clean Ganga Fund (CGF) has been set up to facilitate contributions from corporate entities, NRI’s and individuals for funding in various Ganga Rejuvenation projects.
The Prime Minister gave directions during the meeting for setting of a Digital Dashboard that will help in monitoring the work progress and activities from various initiatives and schemes under the Namami Gange and Arth Ganga on a daily basis by Niti Aayog and the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
