First Anniversary of Fit India Movement: PM Modi releases Age appropriate Fitness Protocols

On September 24, 2020, Fit India Dialogue was held virtually. PM Modi addressed the dialogue and released the “Age appropriate Fitness Protocols” marking the first anniversary of Fit India Movement.

Highlights

During the dialogue, the prime minister interacted with actor Milind Soman, cricketer Virat Kohli. They shared their fitness experiences with the Prime Minister. According to the PM, the other countries that have set fitness goals like India are USA, UK, Germany and Australia. They are running mass level fitness campaigns just like India. During the dialogue, the prime minister also highlighted the importance of mental health.

Fit India Movement

The movement was launched by PM Modi in 29 August 2019. The movement was launched on National Sports Day (29th August). The day is celebrated in the country commemorating the birth anniversary of Major Dhyanchand who enthralled the world with his gaming skills and techniques.

Mental Health care

The GoI has been stressing upon the importance of mental health with the changing lifestyle in the country. Mental Health care Act, 2017 was constituted. The act gives the mentally ill person the right to appoint a nominated representative. Also, it provides Right to access mental health care, right to get free medicines, right to free and quality services, right to community living, right to live in an environment with safe and hygienic amenities.

According to the World Health Organization, mental health illness contributes to 15% of total diseases in the world. Also, in India one in seven people suffer from mental illness, anxiety.

Recently, the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput has triggered the long-needed conversation on mental health in the country.

The WHO says that around 7.5% of Indians suffer from mental health issues. If not addressed at the earliest, depression will be the leading illness in the world.
