FBI report on US Hate Crimes

According to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) report, the number of hate crimes in United States increased to highest level in the year 2020.

Highlights

• Crimes reached to highest level in more than a decade and is the result of rise in assaults targeting Black victims and victims of Asian descent.
• 2020 data was submitted to the FBI by around 15,000 law enforcement agencies worldwide.

Key Findings

• The report identified 7,759 hate crimes in 2020. This number has increased by 6 percent as compared to 2019 data and is the highest tally since 2008.
• Number of offences against Black people increased to 2,755 from 1,930.
• Offences against Asians increased to 274 from 158.
• Out of 7,426 hate crime offences, classified as crimes against people, 53.4 percent of the cases were for intimidation, 27.6 percent were for simple assault while 18.1 percent were for aggravated assault.
• Twenty-two murders and 19 rapes were reported to be hate crimes.
• FBI warned that white supremacist groups represent a rising security threat following a deadly January 6 assault on the US Capitol.
• Hate-inspired attacks on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) have also increased as a result of then-President Donald Trump’s inflammatory remarks blaming China for COVID-19 pandemic.

Stop AAPI Hate

It is a national coalition that gathered data on racially motivated attacks related to the pandemic. It reported 9,081 incidents between March 2020 to June 2021. 4,548 incidents were from 2020 while 4,533 from 2021.
