Fact Sheet: India-Zambia Relationship

Recently Vice President Venkaiah Naidu met Zambian Parliamentary delegation in New Delhi. He welcomed Zambia as a member of the International Solar Alliance and hoped for early ratification of the ISA Framework Agreement.
He also told the delegation that India would be happy to associate with the Zambian Parliament in the training of its officials or any other specific areas.

India – Zambia Relationship

• India and Zambia share friendly and warm relations with each other.
• India was one of the first countries in the world which formally recognised Zambia after it became independent in 1964.
• India has supported Zambia’s economic and technological development through various programmes.
• In 2010, India had announced to extend lines of credit worth USD 75 million to Zambia for its developmental needs.
• Also, a grant of USD 5 million to Zambia for projects in health, education and social sectors were also declared in 2010 by India.
• India has included Zambia in its Duty Free, Quota Free (DFQF) regime for Zambian exports to India as a Least Developed Country.
• India also trains Zambian defence and civilian personnel under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme.
• Zambia has supported India on various International Forums on various matters such as Jammu and Kashmir, terrorism etc. Zambia also supported India when India conducted nuclear tests in 1998.
• Zambia supports permanent membership for India in expanded and reformed UN Security Council.
• The Indian Independence Movement has inspired Zambia’s independence movement.

In 2010, the Bilateral trade between India and Zambia was $200 million in 2010 which both the countries aim to increase to $1 billion. Indian mainly exports pharmaceuticals, transport equipment, plastics and chemical products to Zambia. India imports semi-precious stones, non-ferrous metals, ores (copper and cobalt), semi-precious stones and raw cotton from Zambia.
