Facebook to help BSNL set up 100 wi-fi hotspots in rural India

Social media giant Facebook has partnered with the state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) for setting up 100 wi-fi (Wireless Fidelity) sites in rural India.
In this regard both entities have inked an agreement under which

  • Facebook will sponsor 100 wi-fi hotspots in villages across west and southern India.
  • It will pay 5 lakh rupees for BSNL bandwidth for each hotspot per annum.
  • The partnership will be for three years and it can be further extended for two more years.

With this BSNL will be able to set up wi-fi hotspots in areas where it is not commercially feasible to run those and also extending its optical fibre connectivity services to these hotspots.
