Ethylene Oxide Contamination in Indian Spice Brands

Recently, the reports emerged from Hong Kong’s Centre for Food Safety (CFS) and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) indicating the detection of ethylene oxide, a known carcinogen, in several Indian spice products. Ethylene oxide has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a Group-1 carcinogen, due to its potential to cause cancer when humans are exposed to it. The affected products included specific batches of spices from popular Indian brands MDH and Everest, leading to recalls and a cessation of sales in affected markets.

About Ethylene Oxide

Ethylene oxide is a chemical primarily used for sterilizing medical equipment and in the manufacture of chemicals like ethylene glycol, which is used as antifreeze, coolant, solvent, and precursor to many polymers.

However, it is sometimes used to fumigate foodstuffs to reduce microbial contamination. Despite its effectiveness in these roles, its status as a Group-1 carcinogen necessitates careful management and regulation. Long-term exposure or high concentrations can lead to severe health risks including mutagenicity (changes in DNA), reproductive effects, and carcinogenicity.

Regulations and Impact

Different countries have varying regulations concerning the permissible levels of ethylene oxide in food products. For instance, the European Union has strict limits, whereas regulations might be more lenient or stricter in other regions.

The detection of this compound in Indian spice exports leads to highlight the significant oversight and regulatory mismatch between production standards applied in India and the standards expected by international markets.

Spices Involved and Measures Taken

The CFS report specifically named MDH’s Madras Curry Powder, Sambhar Masala, and Curry Powder, along with Everest’s Fish Curry Masala as contaminated products. Actions taken included immediate recall instructions, stop-sale notices, and ongoing investigations into other potentially affected products.

About Spice Industry in India

India is one of the largest producers and exporters of spices in the world, known for its diverse and flavourful spice varieties. The spices are not only integral to Indian cuisine but also play a pivotal role in the economic and cultural exchange between India and the world. Given the reliance on agricultural exports, incidents like these can tarnish the reputation of Indian spice brands and affect economic stability.

Market and Consumer Impact

Internationally, this event might lead consumers to be wary of spice products from regions with perceived weaker food safety regulations, impacting market trust and consumer behaviour. It also stresses the importance for exporting countries to adhere strictly to international food safety standards to maintain their market positions.
